Nilgiris Seemai Suddhi

2006- 2023

One of the earliest and longest-running community media initiatives, Nilgiris Seemai Suddhi emerged as a multilingual, community-led newsletter created by indigenous barefoot journalists and editors. “Seemai” (cultural boundary) and “Suddhi” (news) reflect its core purpose: to circulate knowledge within and across communities in locally meaningful ways. The newsletter is an archive of community memory and political voice.

Featured contributions:

  • Built a network of community journalists across 5 indigenous groups

  • Enabled monthly editorial gatherings, where reporters collectively decided what stories mattered

  • Documented: Cultural events, rituals, and festivals, Oral histories and community narratives, Livelihoods, agriculture, and ecological knowledge, Access to welfare schemes, health, and civic rights

  • Transitioned from a monthly to quarterly publication in 2016, sustaining continuity despite funding challenges
